Thanksgiving Guest Drama: Mom Demands Payment After Meal

This college student just experienced the most awkward Thanksgiving guest drama ever, and honestly, I’m still processing how rude this woman was.

A 23-year-old grad student has been doing Thanksgiving at her best friend’s house for years. Last year, she and her friend made the charcuterie board and salad while the parents paid for everything and handled the main dishes. Everyone loved it, no drama.

This year they did the exact same thing. The friend swiped her mom’s card for groceries, they made their dishes, and the student brought a $40 box of fancy chocolates as a hostess gift. Everything seemed fine until after dinner.

The mom went ballistic. She cornered the student while her friend was sleeping and started chastising her about not paying for groceries. She kept saying the student “wasn’t a kid anymore” and should contribute to this supposed potluck that nobody ever mentioned was a potluck.

Here’s the kicker – when the student tried to pay her back, the mom refused the money but wouldn’t stop lecturing her. She brought up the Thanksgiving guest drama again later when the friend was present, making it even more uncomfortable.

The student had no idea the rules changed. For a decade, the parents always paid for groceries when she helped cook. She thought she was being a good guest by bringing expensive chocolates and helping in the kitchen.

The mom clearly wanted to be mad more than she wanted to be paid back. You don’t ambush someone’s houseguest while they’re sleeping and then refuse their money – that’s just cruel.
