Friend Forced Me to Leave Club Then Ditched Me at Gas Sta…
The Original Post
so i went out last night w some friends. one of them (letās call her Sarah) offered to drive since she doesnāt drink and said sheād stay sober. cool.
everything was fine until like 1am when she suddenly says sheās ātoo tiredā and wants to leave. i told her i was good staying and iād just uber home later. she kept saying she āfelt responsibleā for me and wouldnāt leave without me. it honestly turned into a whole thing and i didnāt feel like arguing in the middle of the club so i just went with her.
then once we get to the car she goes, āactually iām gonna go to my bfās place, itās closer.ā his place is like 20 mins the opposite direction from mine. she drives there, pulls into a gas station near his house and tells me to just call a ride from there.
the uber back to my place was $25 bc of surge.
if she had just left me at the club like i originally said, i wouldāve paid and not cared. but she basically forced me to leave bc she āfelt responsibleā and then dropped me off halfway so she could see her bf.
so yeah i venmo requested her the $25. now sheās mad saying iām ungrateful because she already āgave me a rideā and my other friends think iām being petty over 25 bucks.
idk. itās not even really about the money. it just feels weird to drag someone out and then leave them at a gas station.
AITA?
What Reddit Said
Reddit overwhelmingly sided with OP in this situation. The top comment perfectly captured the contradiction: if Sarah truly felt responsible, she wouldn’t have abandoned OP at a gas station. Moreover, commenters pointed out that Sarah could have easily dropped OP off first before visiting her boyfriend.
Users were particularly frustrated by Sarah’s manipulative behavior. She forced OP to leave against her wishes, then failed to follow through on her promise. In fact, many Redditors saw this as a classic bait-and-switch situation where Sarah used “responsibility” as an excuse to control the evening.
The Verdict
The overwhelming consensus: OP is Not the Asshole (NTA). This situation perfectly illustrates how a friend forced me leave then ditched me scenarios create legitimate grievances. Sarah’s actions were inconsistent with her stated concerns about responsibility. This falls into classic friendship drama where boundaries were crossed and promises broken.
