Teacher Gives Student Who Did All Work Lowest Grade

šŸ“… January 18, 2026 šŸ‘ļø 27 views ā±ļø 3 min read
A 16-year-old student did 90% of the work on a group project, including all research and slides, while her teammates barely contributed. When grades came back, she received the lowest score (7/10) while her lazy groupmates got 9/10 and 10/10 because they seemed “more confident” during the presentation.

The Original Post

So I (16F) am in a group project class. we were in groups of 3, and I was paired with Lana (16F) and Ian (16M). we had a week to make a presentation. I did the research, wrote most of the scripts, and put together the slides. lana showed up once and gave me few printed pictures for a presentation, that’s the only time she “helped” then she spent the rest of the week not doing anything, ian helped a bit, but not much. we all presented and the teacher said we all did a good job, then she graded us. (We use different grade system) lana got 10/10 ian got 9/10 and I got a 7/10
I got upset and asked the teacher the reason she gave me the lowest grade, all she said was that lana was ā€œmore confidentā€ during the presentation and ian ā€œhelped with the visualsā€ I said that I did 90% of the work and that it wasn’t fair, she then said that grades are based on presentation, not effort, The teacher looked annoyed and said she graded fairly and I shouldn’t be upset with her grading based on how active we were during a presentation, Now my teacher is telling my parents that I was rude and disrespectful and that I’m acting like I’m entitled. Lana said I was being ā€œtoo much” and I “should’ve just asked nicelyā€ I feel like I’m not the problem. If I worked the hardest i should’ve gotten the grade I deserved.

What Reddit Said

Reddit users overwhelmingly supported the frustrated student. Most commenters were outraged by the obvious favoritism and unfair grading system. However, some asked whether the teacher had made it clear beforehand that grades would be based solely on presentation skills rather than actual work contribution.

The top comment received over 6,000 upvotes calling it “outright favoritism.” Many Redditors advised involving parents and school administration. In fact, most agreed that group projects should result in equal grades for all team members.

The Verdict

The overwhelming consensus: OP is Not the Asshole (NTA). This is a classic case where a teacher graded group project unfairly, punishing the hardest worker while rewarding freeloaders. Reddit strongly recommended escalating this issue to school administrators, as this type of grading system discourages actual learning and effort. This situation represents everything wrong with school drama and unfair workplace dynamics that students shouldn’t have to endure.
