When I was in elementary school in my third year a little girl with albinism joined our school. She had completely white hair and usually wore a hat and sunglasses, and most of the time a teacher would walk with her. Back then I didn’t really understand why, but I remember thinking it was kind of cool seeing someone kind of unique.

The next year over summer break, our school moved to a new building. When school started again I saw her there too same white hair, same hat and sunglasses.

After finishing elementary school, I went to a high school that was close to my old elementary one. Every day on the way there I’d pass by the elementary school, and sometimes I’d see her. Each time she was a little taller, a little older.

Then, in my third year of high school, I realized she had joined the same high school as me. One morning, just as I was about to walk through the gates I saw her entering. Same white hair, same hat, same sunglasses. I didn’t think much of it, I was like “oh, I remember her, that’s pretty cool.” Throughout high school, I’d see her around every now and then.

Now I’m in my last year of college, and recently I saw her walking past me again. And suddenly it hit me, I’ve literally watched this girl grow up from a small child to an adult without ever actually knowing her.

We were never in the same class. We never talked. We never even made eye contact. And yet as a complete stranger I witnessed her entire growth just by crossing paths with her over the years.
